Field Trip November 6th 2011

Nice ChanterelleGot a chance to hike for a few hours so returned to a site where I had success last year.  My time was rewarded with some nice Chantelles which I added to a wonderful pasta dish and ate for dinner that night.

I also found a few Devil’s boletes (Boletus satanas)

Field trip October 13th 2011

Finally back after a long wait for rain.  If we get some more rain soon it should be a really good season in the south bay.

Here are some pictures of huge Russulas  (Russula subnigricans )  found on our hike October 13th.

They were near a downed tree and covered with bark and duff.  Not toxic per se but they have an unpleasant order and are quite bitter.  Stomp on sight! :^)

Found nearby were some early chanterelles.  These were very small so I did not collect them.

A typical Jack O' Lantern

Jack O' Lantern found near Ranch San Antonio

Today was a very beautiful day for a hike so I set out to an area near Rancho San Antonio to look for some of my friends in the Fungi kingdom.

I was amazed at the scarcity of mushrooms I found but I assume this is due to the transisiton between winter and spring.

I am going Amanita hunting on Monday.

Helvella lacunosa; Black Elfin Saddle

BLack Elfin Saddle

Went out to look for mushrooms today as it was the first day after many days of rain. Didn’t find much of interest except for a cluster of Black Elfin Saddle.  These tasty but ugly black mushrooms resemble Gyromitra esculenta or false morels, which are know to be toxic.  Be very careful when trying these for that reason.  If I stop writing maybe  I miss identified these :)
