Field trip October 13th 2011
Finally back after a long wait for rain. If we get some more rain soon it should be a really good season in the south bay.
Here are some pictures of huge Russulas (Russula subnigricans ) found on our hike October 13th.
They were near a downed tree and covered with bark and duff. Not toxic per se but they have an unpleasant order and are quite bitter. Stomp on sight! :^)
Found nearby were some early chanterelles. These were very small so I did not collect them.
Fieldtrip 4-1-2011
Today was a very beautiful day for a hike so I set out to an area near Rancho San Antonio to look for some of my friends in the Fungi kingdom.
I was amazed at the scarcity of mushrooms I found but I assume this is due to the transisiton between winter and spring.
I am going Amanita hunting on Monday.
Helvella lacunosa; Black Elfin Saddle
Went out to look for mushrooms today as it was the first day after many days of rain. Didn’t find much of interest except for a cluster of Black Elfin Saddle. These tasty but ugly black mushrooms resemble Gyromitra esculenta or false morels, which are know to be toxic. Be very careful when trying these for that reason. If I stop writing maybe I miss identified these
