Lunchtime Mushroom Trek
Went for a short walk near Picchetti Ranch looking for some fungi.
Didn’t find very much but I especially liked this little pair of Candy Caps.
The Vernal Pool was full!
Lots of water from springs running everywhere.
Helvella lacunosa; Black Elfin Saddle
Went out to look for mushrooms today as it was the first day after many days of rain. Didn’t find much of interest except for a cluster of Black Elfin Saddle. These tasty but ugly black mushrooms resemble Gyromitra esculenta or false morels, which are know to be toxic. Be very careful when trying these for that reason. If I stop writing maybe I miss identified these
More Black Trumpets
So I went out again today, this time with best friend Harry. We took a 6 mile hike into the woods but saw very little in the way of edible mushrooms in fact very few mushrooms at all.
On the way out we checked one more spot and found about two pounds of Black Trumpets making it a great day after all.
We decided to go to my house and cook them up and have a feast of them with wine, bread and cheese.
A great day indeed!
Boletus Edulis – Porcini
This is without a doubt my favorite mushroom. They can be found here in the South Bay area and all around the greater SF bay area.
Beware there are so toxic imitators and some that are edible but just not nearly as tasty. If in doubt don’t eat it but save them for me just in case.
Since these are among the first mushrooms to fruit after some rain it is late for them now. October is best in most years.
If you find some be sure to let me know where you found them. OK? Please!
Field Trip March 2011
My friend Chris and I visited a site know to have Black Chanterelle black trumpet, or horn of plenty.
We were very successful and I am enjoying them for dinner tonight.
I am planning to go out again for more.
We need to get Wade to go with us real soon.
Please comment and tell us what you think.
